Make Your Business Easier to Understand Before Chasing a ChatGPT Citation
What to know before you start
- ChatGPT cites sources it can read, understand and trust
- Clear entity information helps AI systems describe your brand correctly
- Answer-first structure makes passages easier to quote
- Nobody can guarantee a citation, so measure and iterate
Ten years ago the goal was page one of Google. Today a growing number of buyers ask ChatGPT for a recommendation and act on the answer, which means being named in that answer matters. Nobody can promise a citation, but there are practical steps that make your brand easier to find, understand and quote. This is the approach behind our GEO services, laid out as six tactics.
Why ChatGPT cites some brands and ignores others
When ChatGPT answers a question, it draws on what it learned in training and, when browsing or search is used, on pages it can retrieve. Brands that get named tend to share a few traits: clear, consistent descriptions across the web, content that answers questions directly and corroboration from sources other than their own site. Brands that get ignored are often vague about what they do, hard to crawl or mentioned nowhere else.
Content and structure tactics
1. Write answer-first passages
Start important sections with a direct, self-contained answer in one or two sentences, then add detail. AI systems extract passages, so a section that makes sense on its own is more likely to be quoted. Replace vague openers with concrete statements such as "Our service costs X and includes Y".
Add specifics: numbers you can support, named methods, clear definitions and short lists. Remove filler that dilutes the passage.
2. Cover the questions buyers actually ask
List the questions people ask before choosing a provider like you: what it costs, how long it takes, who it suits, how it compares. Give each its own heading and a complete answer. A page that answers fifteen real questions gives AI many more chances to find a match than a page of marketing slogans. Our guide to building a GEO content strategy shows the process.
Authority and entity tactics
3. Make your entity unmistakable
An entity is a distinct thing an AI system can recognise: your company, your founders, your products. Describe them the same way everywhere: your website, LinkedIn, directories and profiles. Use the same name, a short consistent description and the same key facts. On your site, add Organization and Person structured data, an About page with real names and credentials, and clear author bylines.
4. Earn corroboration from other sources
AI systems are more confident about claims confirmed elsewhere. Reviews on reputable platforms, mentions in industry publications, interviews, case studies and listings in respected directories all help. You cannot control these directly, but you can create reasons for them to exist: publish original data, contribute expert commentary and make it easy for customers to review you honestly.
Technical and distribution tactics
5. Keep your site readable to AI crawlers
Make sure important pages return normal content without needing a login or heavy scripts to display text. Check that robots.txt and your security or CDN settings are not blocking AI user agents you want to allow. A clean XML sitemap and fast pages also help. If you choose to add an llms.txt file, treat it as a helpful index and not a ranking trick.
6. Distribute where AI systems look
Publish expertise in places that are widely read and referenced: your own site, but also credible third-party platforms in your industry. Consistent presence across several trusted sources reinforces the signal. Avoid spammy mentions, which can hurt more than help.
A quick before-and-after example
Before: a service page that opens with "We are a leading provider of innovative solutions." After: "Northwind Studio (an illustrative company) is a marketing agency that provides SEO, GEO and ads management for startups. Pricing depends on scope and is quoted after a free audit." The second version names the entity, the offer, the audience and how pricing works. It is also easy to quote. Notice that it contains nothing an AI system would have to guess, and nothing that cannot be checked.
A simple citation-readiness checklist
Run this on each priority page:
- Does the first paragraph state who you are, what you offer and who it is for?
- Does every H2 open with a one or two sentence answer?
- Are prices, timelines or ranges stated, or at least the factors that drive them?
- Is there a named author with credentials and a last-updated date?
- Does the page link to related pages that explain supporting topics?
- Can the key text be read without scripts, logins or images?
- Is the company described the same way on LinkedIn, directories and your About page?
Mistakes that block citations
- Hiding key information inside images, PDFs or scripts that crawlers struggle to read.
- Describing the company differently on every page and profile.
- Publishing only promotional pages, with no genuinely informative content.
- Making claims without sources, which gives AI systems less to corroborate.
- Gating all useful content behind forms.
- Expecting instant results and abandoning the work after a month.
How long does it take to get cited?
Technical changes and content updates can be picked up within a few weeks, particularly where ChatGPT uses live search. Building the corroboration and entity clarity that lead to consistent mentions usually takes several months. Results vary by industry, competition and how crowded the topic is.
The reliable way to track progress is to keep a fixed list of 20 to 30 real buyer questions, ask them in ChatGPT every month and record which brands appear. Our guide on checking whether ChatGPT knows your brand walks through it.
What to do when the answer about you is wrong
Sometimes ChatGPT names you but gets details wrong, such as an old service, a wrong location or a retired price. Find where the wrong information likely comes from: an outdated directory listing, an old press mention or a page on your own site that contradicts a newer one. Correct the source, update your own pages to state the current facts plainly, and re-test after a few weeks. Treat each wrong answer as a map to the page that needs fixing.

Information Gain
For each sampled answer, record mention, page citation and accuracy separately. Investigate a consequential misdescription before chasing more appearances. A linked answer can still attract the wrong enquiry. Keep the prompt and context, without assuming that the cited page explains every source behind the response.
Frequently asked questions
Can I pay to be cited by ChatGPT?
No. Organic ChatGPT answers are separate from advertising, and citations are not for sale. Sponsored placements, where available, are labelled separately.
Why does ChatGPT mention my competitor and not me?
Usually your competitor has clearer entity information, more quotable content or more third-party mentions confirming who they are.
How long does it take to get cited?
Content and technical changes can be picked up within weeks, while consistent citations typically build over several months.
Do I need to allow AI crawlers on my site?
If you want AI systems to read your content, make sure your robots.txt and security settings do not block the relevant crawlers.
Does SEO help with ChatGPT citations?
Yes. Strong rankings, clear content and good authority all help, though AI systems weigh signals differently from search engines.
