AEO Starts With the Question Your Customer Wants Answered

What to know before you start

  • AEO structures content so search systems can lift a direct answer
  • It targets snippets, People Also Ask, AI Overviews and voice answers
  • Clear questions, short answers and structure matter most
  • Smaller sites can win answers without huge authority

People no longer want ten links. They want the answer. Search engines responded by putting answers directly on the results page, and AI assistants now do the same in conversation. Answer Engine Optimization is how you make your content the source of those answers. It is one half of our AEO and AIO services, and it is easier to start than most founders expect.

What AEO is and how it differs from SEO and GEO

SEO aims to rank your pages in a list of results. AEO aims to have a specific passage chosen as the answer shown at the top of the page or spoken aloud. GEO aims to be cited when an AI assistant writes a longer answer. The three share foundations, such as good content, clear structure and trust, but each rewards a slightly different format. If you want the GEO side, see our post on getting cited by ChatGPT.

The 4 types of answer placements AEO targets

  1. Featured snippets. A short paragraph, list or table shown above the normal results. See how to win featured snippets.
  2. People Also Ask. Expandable related questions that appear in most searches. See how to rank in People Also Ask.
  3. AI Overviews and AI answers. Generated summaries that cite supporting sources.
  4. Voice answers. Responses from assistants and smart speakers, usually one short passage. See the voice search guide.

How answer engines decide what to show

Three things matter most:

  • Authority. The source looks trustworthy, with clear authorship, reputation and consistent information.
  • Directness. The page answers the exact question near the top, in plain language.
  • Structure. Headings, lists and tables make the answer easy to extract.

Notice that none of these require a giant domain. A focused page with a clear answer can beat a famous site that buries it.

Why AEO matters for startups

A new site rarely outranks established brands for broad terms. Answer placements change that. Because the winner is chosen on how well a passage answers the question, small sites can appear above bigger competitors for specific questions. That gives startups visibility, brand recognition and qualified traffic earlier than traditional rankings would. It also builds the topical depth described in what is topical authority.

How to start with AEO today: 3 quick wins

  1. Turn headings into questions. Rewrite key H2s as the exact question a buyer asks, such as "How much does it cost?".
  2. Answer first. Put a 40 to 60 word direct answer right under each question heading, then add detail below.
  3. Add structure where it fits. Use a numbered list for steps, a bullet list for options and a table for comparisons.

Then pick your five best pages and apply these three changes. Check Google Search Console for impressions on question-style queries over the next few weeks.

A worked example: rewriting one page for answers

Imagine a project management app with a page that opens with a paragraph about the company mission and hides its plans in a graphic. A buyer asks, "How much does project management software cost for a small team?" The page technically contains the answer, but no system can lift it.

The rewrite has four moves. First, add an H2 that repeats the question in plain words. Second, place a direct answer of about 50 words beneath it, for example: "Project management software for a small team is usually priced per user each month, often with a free tier for very small groups. Your total depends on seats, billing period and add-ons, so compare plans using a worked total for your own team size." Third, add a table with plan name, best for, what is included and limits. Fourth, add a short example that totals the cost for a five-person team, using your real prices.

Nothing about the brand story is lost. It simply moves below the answer, where interested readers will still find it.

A reusable answer template

Use this skeleton for any question heading:

  1. Question as the heading. Use the customer's own wording.
  2. Sentence one. The direct answer, with the key term in it.
  3. Sentence two. The most important condition, exception or number to check.
  4. Supporting block. A list, steps or table, whichever fits the question.
  5. Example. One concrete scenario that shows the answer in use.
  6. Next link. A link to the deeper page on the topic.

Read the first two sentences aloud. If they still make sense with the rest of the page covered, the passage is quotable.

Which format suits which placement

Placement Best format Typical question
Featured snippet Short paragraph, list or table What is it, how do I, which is best
People Also Ask Concise paragraph under a question heading Why, can, does, how long
AI Overview Clear definitions plus supporting facts Broad or comparison questions
Voice answer One short, spoken-friendly passage Local and immediate questions

How to measure whether AEO is working

Keep a simple log with one row per target question. Record the page, the date you changed it, the format you used and which placements you can see for that query. In Google Search Console, filter queries that start with what, how, why, can or does, and compare impressions and average position for the page before and after the edit. Wait several weeks before judging, and change one page at a time at first so you can tell which edit made the difference.

Common AEO mistakes

  • Burying the answer after a long introduction.
  • Writing answers that are too long to quote.
  • Marking up FAQ content that is not visible on the page.
  • Targeting questions you cannot answer better than the current result.

Where to go next

AEO works best alongside strong SEO, so keep your fundamentals healthy. If you want help finding the answer opportunities on your site, book a free strategy session.

Information Gain

Give a reviewer only the question and proposed answer. Ask what they understand, what they would do and what remains uncertain. Compare that with the intended purpose. Fix an easy-to-quote answer that fails the actual question before pursuing another format.
